Study ranks Georgia top 15 state least risky for pet illnesses

ATLANTA – A new 2024 study by Forbes Advisor finds that Georgia ranks in the top 15 states that are least risky for cat and dog illnesses.

Release:

60% of dog owners don’t administer monthly tick-prevention medications, and 63% don’t administer monthly heartworm medications, a new Forbes Advisor’s study revealed.

Our 2024 report analyzed the prevalence of positive cases of 19 pet-related diseases in every state and D.C., and Georgia ranked as the 15th least risky state for pet illnesses.

Key findings from our report:

  • West Virginia is the most risky state for cat and dog illnesses, and Nevada is the least. 
  • The state with the highest percentage of positive canine influenza cases in 2023 is New Mexico.
  • Pennsylvania recorded the most cases of rabies in cats between 2017 to 2021 (237), and Texas recorded the most cases of rabies in dogs in this span (46).

Ticks are most active during spring and summer months and some cases of tick-borne illnesses in dogs, such as ehrlichiosis, are rising.

Tick-related illnesses, parasitic diseases, and canine influenza are some of the 19 pet-related illnesses Forbes Advisor examined in its new report uncovering the most and least risky states for pet illnesses.

The analysis revealed that Georgia ranked as the 15th least risky state for cat and dog illnesses.

Highlights from our report:

  • Arkansas, Maine and West Virginia ranked worst in tick-borne diseases, including anaplasmosis, ehrlichiosis and Lyme disease.
  • Five of the 10 most risky states for pet illnesses are on the East Coast (Maine, New Jersey, New York, Pennsylvania and Rhode Island).
  • Six of the 10 least risky states for pet illnesses are in the West (Hawaii, Idaho, Nevada, Montana, Utah, and Wyoming).
