MARIETTA, Ga. – The city of Marietta covers healthcare for its employees and recently encountered a price spike, according to AJC. The drug called Acthar once cost the $40 a vial, now that same drug costs more than $39,000.

A spokesperson for the Acthar manufactures, Mallinckrodt Pharmaceuticals, told AJC that the company had not been served with the lawsuit yet. However, in 2017 the company settled a Federal Trade Commission lawsuit for $100 million and in 2019 paid more than $15 million to the Department of Justice.

In 2018, Medicare spent $725 million on Acthar for fewer than 2,500 patients. The lawsuit presented by Marietta will simply scratch the surface of the issue with medical costs.
