ATLANTA, Ga. – After nine years, sentencing has finally been passed in the case of Maria Owens and the tragedy that occurred in 2011. Inside of Owen’s home, 11-month-old Jaylen Kelly was beaten and his back was reportedly broken by Owen.

District Attorney Paul Howard fought for this conviction for nine years. He says that Owen became enraged after learning that Jaylen’s parents planned to remove him for her care, according to WJCL. It is believed that Jaylen was slammed on either the side of the bathtub or on the floor.

Howard says that the important lesson of this case is if you’re taking your child to any kind of daycare, make sure they are licensed.
