GA House Rep. Jay Powell Dies in GOP Meeting

YOUNG HARRIS, Ga. – Georgia House Rep. Jay Powell has died, the Georgia Senate confirmed Tuesday morning.

Powell, the Republican chairman of the Georgia House Rules Committee, collapsed and died Monday morning during a GOP retreat at Brasstown Valley Resort & Spa, which is located just north of Young Harris, according to Heavy.com.

He was 67.

The GBI was requested to assist the investigation into his death by the Towns County Sheriff’s.

GBI spokeswoman Nelly Miles said more information available following an autopsy.

Powell took office in 2008, and has served in office since 2009, representing House District 171 in Camilla, which includes portions of Colquitt, Decatur, and Mitchell counties. He previously served as chairman of the House Ways and Means Committee, the primary tax-writing committee.

Powell is survived by his wife, Deidra, who owns the Bleu Pub and Bleu Cafe in Valdosta, Ga.
