LAKE MARY, Fla. – A new bill filed for the 2020 state legislative session could put an end Florida’s conceal carry law, allowing gun owners to carry without a permit.
Lake County Republican and State Representative Anthony Sabatini introduced the bill last Tuesday to turn the state into a Constitutional Carry state, according to a report from Fox 13.
The bill would not allow carrying a gun in certain places like courthouses. Sabatini said it would not change any rules in place to purchase guns, such as age limits and background check requirements.
Constitution Carry means that someone can carry a handgun without a license or permit, derived from the Second Amendment to the U.S. Constitution, which gives citizens the right to bear arms. Constitution Carry is allowed in more than a dozen U.S. states, including:
- Alaska
- Arizona
- Arkansas
- Idaho
- Kansas
- Maine
- Mississippi
- Missouri
- New Hampshire
- North Dakota
- Vermont
- West Virginia
- Wyoming
In Georgia, you can carry a concealed gun but it requires a background check and a valid carry permit.
The current Florida Conceal Carry rules require residents pass a gun safety class in order to get their carry permit, Fox 13 reported.
The bill also includes changes to age limits for carrying, as well as rule changes in reference to out-of-state permit holders and reciprocity.
