SAVANNAH, Ga. – Last Saturday night Savannah officers responded to a robbery on the 2300 block of Bull Street that led to a shooting in which one officer was killed.

That officer was Sergeant Kelvin Ansari.

The shooting begun when officers noticed a car that matched the description of what they were looking for. They approached the car and two of the officers were shot in the process.

The second officer alongside Ansari, Douglas Thomas, was provided medically treated and eventually released.

Ansari, 50 years old, served in the United States Army for 21 years before joining the Savannah Police Department back in 2008 – serving nearly 11 years with the department.

Ansari was involved with patrol, public housing enforcement, and investigations in the Northwest Precinct. He was also a supervisor in the Central Precinct.

Ansari had a family of six – him, his wife, and four children.

The Savannah Police Department asks that the community keeps not only the Ansari family but the Douglas family in their prayers.

Police Chief, Roy Minter, expressed how much of a great man Ansari was. Minter said he spent, “a substantial portion of his life protecting the country and protecting the community.”

“We lost a leader.” he said.

As the arrangements become available for Sergeant Ansari, they will be announced.
The Georgia Bureau of Investigations will be further investigating the incident.
