Even though the tornado that intermittently touched down in portions of Fulton County was only classified as an EF0, officials with the National Weather service report that thousands were left without power for a time and structural damage was also reported. In Cochran Mill Park over 100 hardwood and pine trees were either snapped or uprooted.
Heroine, methamphetamine and numerous weapons have been seized in Operation Breaking Bad; a Gwinnett County Gang task Force joint yearlong investigation with the Department of Alcohol, Tobacco and Firearms. 30 gang members and drug dealers have been taken into custody.
A petition before the Moultrie City Council seeking an extension on the hours that alcohol could be served in a nightclub was denied after discussion. The current cut-off time for serving alcoholic beverages is midnight, though other areas allow serving until 2am. Council members cited the combination of later serving time and increased violence as a major factor in their denial of the extension.
The Valdosta, Moultrie and Tifton Main Street programs have been recognized along with 13 other municipalities by the Georgia Department of Community Affairs. The organization honored the cities for programs of new business development, job creation, rehabilitation and downtown housing. These 16 cities will be designated later in the year by the National Main Street Center as Main Street America™ Premier communities, serving as leading examples of Main Street-style community transformations and demonstrating considerable economic return on investments.
The City of Valdosta will be closed on Friday, April 14 in observance of Good Friday. The Sanitation Division will collect residential garbage only on Friday, April 14. Sanitation customers who normally have their sanitation collected on Fridays should place their recyclables and yard waste at the curbside by 5 a.m. on Monday, April 17 for both Friday and Monday pickups. Four adults and a 16 year old female runaway juvenile from Florida were taken into custody by officials in Thomas County. A Thomasville resident noticed someone attempting to break into their vehicle and they notified police and when confronted the car-thief fled with accomplices. A description of the suspect and the tag number of the vehicle carrying the other suspects was given to police and when officers spotted the suspect’s vehicle a chase began that involved Thomas and Grady County officers. The suspects were captured at the Grady County line.
The City of Valdosta will observe National Community Development Week, April 17- 22, with various events that will highlight the year-round resources provided through the city’s Community Development Block Grant program. The Federal Housing and Urban Development program provides grants to states, cities and counties to improve the physical, economic and social conditions in communities.
