TALLAHASSEE, Fla. – We’ve had our share of wild fires (here and here) and dry weather over our area recently.
And, coincidentally, it’s Wildfire Awareness Week. Because of the week and the recent news, officials are getting the word out on how to protect your property.
First, make sure you have at least 30 feet of defensible space. This zone should be free of tall, fire-prone plants. Then make sure your property also free of dead plants and leaves.
Also keep flammable materials and liquids indoors away from the elements and potential fires. Keep fire wood at least 30 feet from your home. Also remove any pine needles and leaves from your roof, and have dead brush and debris removed from under your deck.
It’s always a good idea to have a kit on hand to bring with you if you need to suddenly evacuate. The kit should include items such as water and food to last three days, and a first aid kit.
Dry weather is expected to stay in the forecast in the extended period, and it’s important to ensure that you are protected and prepared.
