VALDOSTA – On Thursday at approximately 8:18 am, Valdosta Police Officers, Valdosta Fire Fighters, and Emergency Medical Services were dispatched to the 300 block of South Fry Street in reference to a report of a vehicle being struck by a train.

Officers on scene were advised that a vehicle was traveling on South Fry Street when it ran out of gas on the train tracks. A second vehicle stopped and a citizen attempted to offer assistance to the stranded motorist. While rendering aid, a train began approaching both vehicles. The stranded vehicle was able to be pushed out of the way.

The assisting motorist got into his vehicle and attempted to get out of the path of the train. His vehicle was struck in the front causing moderate damage. The vehicle had two occupants including the driver. Both had complaints of minor injuries and were transported to a local hospital for treatment. The accident is still under investigation at this time.

“The Valdosta Police Department commends the efforts of the good Samaritan for attempting to help a fellow motorist. However, motorists are reminded that if a vehicle becomes disabled on a train track to get all persons clear of the track and to call 911 immediately,” said Lieutenant Adam Bembry.
