New job opportunities will come to Tifton with the completion of construction on a new Piedmont National Corporation distribution Center. 30 workers will be employed at the facility which is expected to go online in the summer.

Phone scammers in the Tifton/Tift County area are calling restaurants posing as police officers seeking bail money for employees of the businesses. So far , two incidents have been reported involving the arrests of district managers and law enforcement officials are issuing warnings to put owners, managers and employees on notice.
The Georgia Department of transportation announces resurfacing projects are set to begin on state roadways in Berrien and Lanier counties. The contractor Reames and Son Construction Co. Inc. of Valdosta will work on the two projects simultaneously because the routes join in Ray City. The work will extend from state road 37 at the Cook County line to State road 125; the construction cost is $1.44 million. The other work involves U.S. Highway129/State road 11 from east of the Alapaha River in Lakeland to State road 125 at a cost of $1.98 million. Both projects should be complete by Nov. 30.
The members of the Cairo City Council have approved earmarking funding for the building of a new police headquarters. Cairo is expected to receive almost 3.5 million dollars from a bond issue for CNS consolidation. Council members also approved the purchase of a new pick-up truck for the Cairo Fire department.
The multi-agency task force drug raids were carried out across the state with arrests in Savannah, Port Wentworth, Stone Mtn., Garden City and Atlanta. Two other suspects remain on the run from officers involved in the 12 month joint investigation.
Craig Schneider of the Atlanta Journal reports that about one in five Georgia residents are the recipients of food stamps, and more and more states are adopting new federal guidelines that will stop people deemed able to work and without children from benefiting from the social program. The deadline is April 1st and thousands of Georgians could lose their benefits unless they find employment; that represents 12,000 adults in 21 Georgia counties.
Members of the Georgia House of representatives have taken action that expands eligibility for persons to use medical cannabis. The marijuana bill comes with new conditions for the number of diseases for which physicians may prescribe the low THC cannabis oil. The list is now opens up eligibility to eight diseases. Over 1,300 patients in the state of Georgia have taken advantage of the cannabis oil since the passage of the law in 2015. The bill now goes back to the Georgia Senate.
Two Florida men are behind bars after Lowndes deputies seized 18 pounds of various marijuana products during an Interstate 75 traffic stop last week, and investigators believe the drugs were flown from Colorado to Atlanta. During a search of the vehicle, deputies reportedly found 18 pounds of marijuana in four vacuum sealed bags, THC oil, white chocolate candy containing THC and gummy candy containing THC, according to LCSO reports.
The manager of a Valdosta pizza restaurant is behind bars after allegedly stealing nearly $7,000 from the business. Daniel MacDonald, 41, was arrested by the Lowndes County Sheriff’s Office following an investigation into the theft of money from Marco’s Pizza. MacDonald allegedly took money from nightly deposits and used proceeds from the next day to cover the missing money. At last report he was held on a $7,500 bond.
