Judge Richard Cowart sentenced the former Mauor of the City of Meigs, Linda Harris to five years of probation. She was convicted in February of violation of her oath of office and theft by taking. Harris will also have to spend between 90 and 180 days in a detention facility but remains free until assigned. Harris has been prohibited from going to City Hall and the Community Center and she cannot attend council meetings or run for office along with other sentencing requirements.

In a related story Cheryl Walters resigned from the office of Mayor in Meigs Monday during a council meeting but she has since rescinded her resignation. Walters cited personal and political reasons for leaving office but upon returning she hopes that the city can move forward under the current leadership.

Valdosta Police Chief Brian Childress has issued a warning regarding a check scam. Childress points to a letter and cashier’s check claiming to be from Biz-Checkers, involving secret shoppers-financial services and emailing.  The chief says that any such mail should be reported to the FBI.

Law enforcement officials in Perry, Florida report the seizure of 37 pounds of cocaine from a plane that landed at the Perry-Foley Airport. The pilot and passenger were arrested.
