Organizers of the 39th Sunbelt Agricultural Exposition report that over 1,200 exhibitors set up for this year’s event at Spence Field with and the attendance numbers of close to 83 thousand topped last year’s numbers by approximately 2 thousand persons. Planning for the 40th 2017 October event will soon get underway.
The UGA Conference Center will be the host site for the 2017 Relay For Life inaugural meeting scheduled for November 10th at 6 p.m. Participating teams are already coming together for the Tifton event. It all began as an effort to heighten awareness about breast cancer while also celebrating the ongoing battle faced by survivors. The fundraiser benefits the American Cancer Society and the local effort is part of an international movement. For more information call 292-6088.
34 year old Gina Denise Curry of Pavo was taken into custody along with Ronnie Jones age 35. Investigators went to the home of Gina Curry and seized over a pound of cocaine and $12,000 in cash. The suspects had been warned in June that they were under investigation. Two vehicles were also seized during the investigation. Their distribution network included Brooks and eastern Thomas Counties; Pavo, Boston and Barwick.
Special tribute was paid to veterans of the Vietnam War in Colquitt County. The weekend ceremony recognized the fact that many service personnel returning from the theater of war often received less that warm welcomes from their hometown residents. The recipients were awarded certificates and pins in appreciation and recognition of their service and sacrifice.
The National Council of Negro Women, Inc. (NCNW) recently convened its 57th Biennial Convention in Washington, DC and during their meeting several new officers were elected to serve in national positions. Among the newly elected officials was Valdosta’s Sharah Denton Development Director for Lowndes Associated Ministries to People also known as LAMP; she will serve as the National Young Adult Vice-President. The National Council of Negro Women was founded in 1935 by the renowned educator and civil rights activist, Dr. Mary McLeod Bethune. The Georgia State Conference will be held in Valdosta, Georgia in August of 2017.
