Organizers of the Georgia National Fair now underway in Perry report last years numbers at more than half-a-million visitors during the 11 day festivities and they hope that this years numbers break records. This is the 27th year for the fair that features good food, rides, livestock shows entertainment and lots more. The event continues through the 16th.

10.5 million dollars is the judgement amount handed down against the City of Albany. The order calls for payment to be made to the parents of LaShelton Stanford; they sued the city of Albany, the owners of a local night club and convicted gang members in the death of their son. He was beaten and then shot six timesin 2010 by Shenard Smith who is now incarcerated. The jury awarded the family 15.2 million dollars; of that amount the city is responsible for 70 percent. The lawsuit held that the club operated illegally and was not shut down by city officials. It was licensed to operate as a recording studio.

Georgia’s Attorney General Sam Olens has a new job, he has been named the new President of Kennesaw State University by the Board of Regents. His official start date is November 1st. Olens was elected to the post of Attorney General in 2010 and won re-election in 2014. State Economic Development Commissioner Chris Carr will become Georgia’s 48th attorney general effective Nov. 1st.

The City of Valdosta Neighborhood Development Division will host a City-Wide Bulk Trash Amnesty Day at specific locations only, in conjunction with the nationally-recognized Make-A-Difference Day, on Saturday, Oct. 22, from 9 a.m. to 12 p.m. This event will allow Valdosta residents to dispose of unwanted household items and other bulky trash items at no cost. Residents with trash for disposal must bring a copy of their City of Valdosta Utilities Statement and a photo ID as proof of residency.
