CALHOUN CO. – Several Georgia prisons have been placed on lockdown because of rising tensions between gangs.

State officials said they decided to restrict the movement of inmates and cancel visitation after a June 11 homicide at Calhoun state prison and after multiple fights broke out between several gangs in different areas at the Smith State Prison on June 20, injuring 16.

Other incidents at Autry, Hancock, Macon, Telfair, Valdosta, and Ware State Prisons have also prompted lockdowns to ensure the safety of inmates.
