THOMASVILLE – A Thomasville man is warning others of a telephone scam that cost him thousands.
Gordon Singelton, 71, said he began receiving phone calls at the beginning of March saying he had won a Mercedes Benz, $100,00 in cash and $7.5 million. The catch was that Gordon first had to send money to Jamaica; through Western Union or Moneygram. He said he never sent more than $950 at one time. One receipt he pulled out to show was for $125.
With the help of his daughter, it didn’t take long for Gordon to figure out it was all a scam, but by then it was too late. Gordon had already spent more than $6,000. Money now gone from a joint account shared by he and his wife, but he said at the time all he wanted to do was help.
“My wife is dying with cancer, and I figured if I could get the money, I could pay the doctor bills, that’s the reason I did it,” Gordon explained.
