GWINNETT COUNTY – A former director of bands and music technology at the state’s No. 1 high school was arrested Tuesday on child molestation charges, a Gwinnett County Public Schools spokeswoman said Wednesday.

Michael Appelbaum, who spent nearly eight years at the Gwinnett County School of Mathematics, Science and Technology, is in the Gwinnett Adult Detention Center on multiple charges, including multiple counts of aggravated child molestation and one count of sexual assault by a teacher, principal or administrator, according to online jail records.

His arrest came on the same day U.S. News & World Report named GSMST Georgia’s best high school and the nation’s 27th best high school.
