ATLANTA — A veteran legislator and civil rights activist will be heading to federal prison.

Tyrone Brooks, 70, was sentenced Monday to one year and one day in federal prison related to his conviction on tax, mail, and wire fraud charges.

Brooks’ legal team, which included former Governor Roy Barnes, pleaded for probation.  Prosecutors requested two years in prison.

U.S. District Judge Amy Totenberg reviewed federal sentencing guidelines and witness testimony to arrive at her decision after four days of deliberation.
