A liberal advocacy group is attempting to get 35,000 signatures over the next 4 weeks in an attempt to block public money from going towards the building of a new, $1 billion stadium for the Atlanta Falcons.
Common Cause Georgia is hoping to force a November vote on the city’s plan to use $200 million in hotel-motel taxes to help fund the downtown stadium’s construction. Atlanta city attorneys, however, say the fight is baseless as the petition would not withstand a legal challenge.
Of the $1B cost, 1/5 of that will come from the hotel-motel tax money. The rest will be funded by the Falcons, the NFL and the sale of personal seat licenses.
