Construction is slated to start on the new Colquitt County High School in July, but some parents are asking for that to be delayed. Some area parents say the school board failed to follow procedure in picking the new school’s site. Parent and attorney Michael Strickland told WALB that the site is not safe, as ” there is a railway very close to school and passing in a very close distance to the school is explosives of agricultural chemicals.”

According to Strickland, the school board has never read a state document that outlines a criteria for a school’s location. One such board member, Roy Reeves, said late last week that the board ‘didn’t have to sign off on that document because the school site was chosen before any of them served.’

The state Department of Education has already signed off on the new school’s location, which is set to open for the 2015 school year.
