LOWNDES CO. — Smoke from nearby wildfires is impacting Lowndes County as officials urge caution and remind residents not to burn.

Release:

Smoke and ash from multiple wildfires in surrounding counties continue to impact Lowndes County.

There is currently NO active wildfire threat within Lowndes County, but conditions remain dry and dangerous.  

Residents may experience:
• Heavy smoke and reduced visibility
• Eye/throat irritation, coughing, or breathing difficulty
• Increased risk for those with respiratory conditions

Protect Yourself:
• Stay indoors when smoke is heavy
• Keep windows and doors closed
• Limit outdoor activity
• Use A/C on recirculate if available
• Wear an N95 mask if outdoors for extended periods

The Governor has issued a total ban on all outdoor burning, including fireworks, until at least May 22nd.  In addition, a restriction on ALL outdoor residential burning remains in effect in unincorporated Lowndes County until further notice.  

Some people remain intent on violating state and local regulations by continue to burn. Citations WILL be issued for violations. NO warnings will be given.

Do NOT burn debris or yard waste. Avoid any activity that could cause sparks, including improperly discarding cigarette butts. With current drought conditions, even a small spark can start a dangerous wildfire.

Many areas are experiencing reduced visibility due to smoke.  Please use extra caution while driving.
