BREAKING: Arrest Made in Oak St. Homicide

VALDOSTA, Ga. – On January 22, 2020, at approximately 7:47 p.m., Valdosta Police Officers responded to a residence in the 700 block of South Oak Street, after a citizen called 911 and advised that a subject that had been shot.

Upon arrival officers found Rashawn Mays deceased at the scene. Detectives and Crime Scene Personnel responded to the scene to conduct an investigation. During the investigation, detectives determined that the victim was involved in a dispute with a person known to him when the offender produced a firearm and shot the victim.

Update:

On Monday, January 27, 2020, detectives obtained arrest warrants for Shamar Dequan Wilson, in connection with this homicide. Wilson was taken into custody without incident and he was transported to Lowndes County Jail on the following charges:

  • Felony Murder;
  • Armed Robbery;
  • Aggravated Assault 2 counts; and
  • Possession of a firearm during the commission of a felony.

“Our detectives and crime scene personnel have been working non-stop conducting this investigation and processing evidence,” said VPD Chief Leslie Manahan. “I am extremely proud of the work that our department has done and is continuing to do in this case.”

The case is still on-going and further charges are pending.
