VPD Arrests 3 for Fatal Shooting

VALDOSTA, Ga. – On September 23, 2019, at approximately 1:30 p.m., Valdosta Police officers and detectives responded to the 400 block of West Mary Street, in reference to a subject calling E911 stating that two people had been shot.

Upon their arrival, they found two males inside a vehicle that had been shot.  Officers and detectives removed the two victims from the vehicle and immediately started providing first aid.

Valdosta Fire Department and EMS arrived on scene. One victim was pronounced deceased on scene, while a second victim was transported by EMS to South Georgia Medical Center to receive further treatment. Crime Scene personnel from the Valdosta-Lowndes Regional Crime Laboratory responded to assist in the investigation.

During the investigation, it was determined that the victims were shot while traveling in the 1100 block of Melody Lane.  Officers and detectives responded to this area.  Evidence was located at this scene which confirmed that the incident occurred at this location.

Based off of information gathered in the investigation, this appears to be an isolated incident.

“Our thoughts and prayers go out to the victims’ families at this time,” commented VPD Chief Leslie Manahan. “This is a horrible and unnecessary incident.  We hope that the community will come forward with any information that they have.”

UPDATE:

On Thursday, September 26, 2019, detectives obtained arrest warrants for Shaivon Edwards in connection with the homicide.  On Friday, September 27, 2019 Edwards turned himself in at the Valdosta Police Department.  Edwards is currently in Lowndes County Jail, where he is being held for:

  • Felony Murder;
  • 3 counts of Aggravated Assault-felony; and
  • Possession of a firearm during the commission of a crime.

During the investigation, Tawanya Postell and Ashia Edwards provided false statements to law enforcement, which hindered the detectives with their investigation.  Arrests warrants were obtained on both of them for providing a false statement to law enforcement-felony.  Both were arrested Friday and transported to Lowndes County Jail.

The case is still under investigation and more charges are pending.
