VALDOSTA – No matter which side you’re on, the Campus Carry law is now a reality on public college campuses in Georgia.
“I’m not against it, but I’m also not for it,” says Stefan Wilcox, a Valdosta State student.
“It’s the people who carry the guns, not the guns that kill people,” says Christopher Feagin, another VSU student.
Just days before it took effect, Valdosta State sent an educational video about the new law to students.
“Many of you have strong feelings regarding this bill,” says VSU Police Chief Alan Rowe in the video.
“We are a learning community, built on trust and mutual respect. That is true today and it will still be true after July 1,” says VSU President Richard Carvajal, also from the video .
Concealed handguns are now allowed in certain classrooms at VSU.
“I feel like you don’t really need a gun to be on campus, but if you do, especially at night time, I could see that,” says Matthew Smith, a VSU student.
Some students say they understand the new law for the sake of safety, while others worry if it was the right move.
“A lot of people would jump to conclusions or make the wrong decision that can impact not only their life, but someone else’s life,” says student Ashley Jordan.
“When you come in it should be checked and when you leave it should be checked,” says Wilcox. “It should be safe at all times.”
Both sides, however, can agree on the need for more answers.
“I feel like if Valdosta doesn’t become strict and get this in check, I might not be here for all four years,” says Smith.
Students say they want a concrete plan, so everyone can feel safe on campus.
