VALDOSTA – At approximately 2:30 am, on Friday, March 10, staff and patients at South Georgia Medical Center reported the smell of smoke in the South Tower.

The fire alarm activated and staff responded quickly to identify the source and relocate patients as needed. The Valdosta Fire Department responded immediately, identifying the source of the fire on the roof and quickly containing the situation.

For approximately two hours, smoke in the hospital was the main issue. As of 7:30 am smoke has cleared and hospital operations are continuing as normal.

“We greatly appreciate the response of the VFD and leadership of Chief Freddie Broome,” said Heath Evans, SGMC Interim Chief Executive Officer. “The hospital staff responded rapidly and appropriately to secure the situation and protect patients.”
