Release from the Valdosta Police Department

On November 28, 2016 at approximately 9:15 p.m., a uniformed Valdosta Police Officer was on normal patrol when he heard several gunshots nearby.

As the officer began responding in the direction of the gunshots, within one minute an emergency 911 call was received by Lowndes County E-911 indicating that a subject had just been shot in the Ora Lee West Housing Area located at 610 E Ann Street.

Officers made contact with the victim who appeared to be suffering from multiple gunshot wounds and was unresponsive. Paramedics responded to the scene to attempt treatment, but were not successful.

The victim, Emory Carter Jr., was pronounced deceased while on scene. The crime scene was immediately sealed off and additional resources were called in for assistance.

Valdosta Police Department detectives responded to the incident location to speak with witnesses and crime scene technicians from the Valdosta-Lowndes Regional Crime Lab also responded to the scene to process the area for evidence.

This case is active and detectives are actively pursuing leads at this time. At this point, video evidence has been recovered from the housing authority and is being analyzed at this time. More information will be available as the case progresses.

“If anyone has any information regarding this incident, they are urged to contact the Valdosta Police Department immediately,” said VPD Lt. Adam Bembry.
