REMERTON, Ga. – The Remerton Police Department is searching for a suspect who shot a man in the leg Wednesday and has charged the victim and another individual with marijuana possession with the intent to distribute.
At approximately 12:50 p.m., RPD officers responded to an apartment complex at 1300 Melody Lane in reference to a reported shooting.
Officers on scene found Thomas Matthews, 22, of Valdosta with a superficial gunshot wound to the leg.
Matthews was a passenger in a vehicle driven by Tony Mathis Davis, 29, of Valdosta. Davis and Matthews were parked in the complex’s parking lot when the shooting took place. Davis was not injured in the incident.
Matthews was transported by Lowndes County EMS to South Georgia Medical Center where he was treated and released.
Multiple area agencies responded to the scene to assist RPD officers in identifying and locating the shooter, including the Lowndes County Sheriff’s Office, LCSO Special Operations Department, the Valdosta Police Department, VPD Drug Squad, Valdosta State University Police Department, the Remerton Fire Department and City of Valdosta Public Works.
Matthews and Davis gave investigators conflicting accounts of the incident but described the shooter as a 5’10 black male with a thin build and wearing all black.
Operating under the assumption that the shooter may still be in the apartment complex, a search warrant was executed on the building. After searching the entire building, investigators were unable to locate a suspect.
During the course of the investigation, RPD officers discovered 16.9 grams of marijuana in Davis’ vehicle.
Davis was arrested Wednesday night and charged with possession of marijuana with intent to distribute. Davis was taken to the Lowndes County Jail.
Matthews has also been charged with possession of marijuana with intent to distribute, and a warrant has been issued for his arrest.
