VALDOSTA – The Valdosta Fire Department responded to a residential fire at 603 E. 3rd Avenue, at 9:43 a.m., on Oct. 26, 2016. The first fire unit arrived on the scene at 9:45 a.m. and reported heavy smoke and fire conditions that were extending from one of the side windows. A total of 16 fire units and 25 fire personnel were on the scene, and the fire was under control at 10:15 a.m.

Prior to arrival, fire units received reports that an elderly citizen was inside the residence. Fire units on the scene initiated an aggressive fire attack and search and rescue efforts to locate the citizen who was in one of the rooms. The fire attack and search and rescue efforts were complicated due to limited access and excessive storage in the home.

The fire resulted in the death of a Alneatha Whitfield, 70.

The fire is currently under investigation; however, it does not appear to be suspicious. The Valdosta Police Department is assisting with the investigation.

The Valdosta Fire Department appreciates the assistance from Georgia Power, who was requested to disconnect all electrical utilities, and from SGMC EMS, who assisted with firefighter rehabilitation.

“We are all saddened by this loss of life,” said Valdosta Fire Chief Freddie Broome. “As always, our highly-trained firefighters responded quickly to the emergency call and made every effort to identify and evacuate any individuals inside.”
