
LOWNDES Co. – Georgia State Patrol Post 31 investigated 18 crashes during the Labor Day weekend.
During the 78-hour Labor Day Holiday Period which started on Friday, September 2nd and ended Monday, September 5 , Post 31 Troopers investigated 18 crashes with two injuries and no fatalities.
Of the 18 crashes, one was caused from a driver following too closely, three were caused from driver’s failing to maintain their lane of travel, one was caused by an impaired driver, and three were due to vehicle striking fallen trees during the storm.
Post 31 Troopers conducted 186 traffic stops resulting in 139 citations and 111 warnings. Troopers issued 75 speeding citations, 12 seatbelt violations, four child restraint violations, two distracted driving citations, and made two DUI arrests.
Statewide, Georgia State Patrol investigated eight of 13 crashes resulting in fatalities. Fatal crashes were reported by Post 5-Dalton; Post 38-Rome; Post 6-Gainesville; Post 7-Toccoa; Post 21-Sylvania; Post 40-Albany; Post 13-Tifton and Post 23-Brunswick.
Other agencies reporting fatal crashes (5): Floyd County Police Department; Atlanta Police Department (2); Columbus Police Department; and Savannah-Chatham Metropolitan Police Department.
A total of 13 fatalities were reported during the 2016 Labor Day Holiday Period. Troopers issued more than 8200 citations, 10,900 warnings and made 297 DUI arrests statewide for the holiday period.
