VALDOSTA — The City of Valdosta is poised to raise property taxes by almost 27 percent.

City officials say the tax hike is partially due to a decrease in the tax digest due to a drop in property and motor vehicle values, while the 2017 budget reflects spending increases, mainly for employee raises.

Three public hearings will be held for public input in the next two weeks. The hearings are scheduled for noon and 6 p.m., Aug. 17, and 5 p.m., Aug. 25, at City Hall.
