LOWNDES Co. – There’s a new employee in the Lowndes County court system, and some might just say, she has a leg or two up on other victim advocates.

RuRu is a rescued retriever and lab mix.

She’s in the process of being certified as a therapeutic dog for victims being interviewed or in court.

“If you can imagine, it can be an intimidating atmosphere for adults, yet alone children,” says Justin Cabral, Lowndes County Solicitor General.

He says RuRu’s relaxing nature is something victims can sense too.

“Victims have rights too and it’s important the victim’s voices are heard. RuRu is just one way for us to be able to do that,” says Cabral.

She’s the County’s first-ever therapy dog.

“She’s boosted the morale of everyone in our office,” says Karen Hayes, Victim Witness Coordinator. “When she comes through the courthouse doors she brings smiles on everyone’s faces.”

Hayes is RuRu’s handler.

She rescued the dog from a shelter in Chatham County.

She says her family has already been impacted by their new four-legged family member.

“I have two sons and they already consider her their younger sister,” says Hayes.

A friendly, furry face that’s now providing companionship and courage in the courtroom.
