VALDOSTA – The Mu Omicron Chapter of Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity Inc. and the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People (NAACP) at Valdosta State University will host a commemorative march and candlelight vigil beginning at 4 p.m. on Monday, Jan. 18.

“This year we want to encourage an active celebration,” said Jasmin Martin, VSU NAACP president. “This means remembering the legacy by internalizing Martin Luther King Jr.’s accomplishments and implementing that work ethic and optimism in each of our lives and daily practices.”

The march will begin at 4 p.m. at the University Center fountain and end at the front steps of West Hall. The event will conclude with a candlelight vigil, followed by a few words from William Jimerson, a May 2014 graduate who earned a bachelor’s degree in international business from VSU’s Harley Langdale Jr. College of Business Administration and Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity Inc. member who will speak on how King set the tone of the movement that ensured civil rights for all people regardless of race and how his values are still in existence to date.
