VALDOSTA –  A New Year’s Day fire caused thousands of dollars worth of damage to a Valdosta apartment complex.

At 3:04 p.m., the Valdosta Fire Department responded to a structure fire at the Lemans Apartment complex at 415 Northside Drive. The fire was located in a bedroom in apartment E-5, said VFD Captain James Clinkscales.

“Units arrived on the scene to find flames and smoke coming from right front corner of the structure,” Clinkscales said. “Engine crews quickly made a fire attack from the front side of the apartment with a hose line. A water source was established, and engine crews assisted with fire attack. Other fire personnel performed a search of the apartment.”

Five residents were displaced due to the blaze, which “severely damaged” 30 percent of the apartment. Forty percent of the apartment unit was damaged by smoke and heat, Clinkscales.

The fire caused an estimated $11,500 worth of damage, and the source of the fire has yet to be determined, Clinkscales said.
