A six-week course in Math for Standardized Tests will e offered by Valdosta State University for students taking the SAT, ACT, and GRE course Jan. 25 through March 2 from 5-6:15 p.m. Mondays and Wednesdays. Interested persons can log ontowww.valdosta.edu/ce or call (229) 245-6484 for registration and cost information. The course costs $89 for those who register by Tuesday, Jan. 19, and $99 thereafter. No textbook is required, and all handouts will be provided.
Joshua Hamilton of Doerun is recovering from an automobile accident that occurred last week. He lost control of his car in a curve- left the roadway-and ended up striking a culvert. He was airlifted to a Tallahassee hospital and was last listed in good condition.
The political and legal fallout continue in Meigs and now the Sheriff of Thomas County plans to investigate just why the Municipal Court of that City had to be cancelled twice and charges against the nephews of the Mayor-Linda Harris were dropped. The investigation was prompted by a request from a City Council member. One of the main issues involving the court surrounds the absence of the clerk of the court.
Abigail Lee Kemp has an appearance scheduled in federal court today in the wake of her arrest by agents with the FBI in Smyrna. A second unidentified person was also detained. After participating in multiple jewelry outlet robberies in five states including Georgia she has been captured. Officials say that the take is estimated to be about four million dollars.
Residents of Colquitt County and the surrounding area are contributing to a fund set up to help a fireman and his family after a fire destroyed their home. Multiple firefighting units responded to the home of Nate and Katie Whitlatch but could not save their residence. The couple has three children and persons wishing to contribute can do so via their GoFundMe account page at https://www.gofundme.com/ nrkmbnv8, or by contacting the Colquitt County Fire Department.
Applications from new students will be accepted at Scintilla Charter Academy Jan. 11-29. Enrollment is open to students entering kindergarten through fifth grade for the 2016-2017 school calendar year. Applicants must be at least 5 years old on or before Sept. 1 and the parent or guardian of the child must live in Valdosta or Lowndes County. The applications will be available at the school’s website, www. scintillacharteracademy.com, and the school’s front office, 2171 E. Park Ave. Scintilla is a free public school and is the only charter academy in the area. The campus is available for tours 9-10:30 a.m. Tuesday and Wednesday.
