NEWTON — A man was taken to an Albany hospital for psychiatric evaluation after firing shots at local authorities.

WALB is reporting that Saturday, a Baker County man was been taken to Phoebe Putney Memorial Hospital for a psychiatric evaluation after firing four shots at authorities.

Early Saturday morning, Newton Police responded to a home alarm on Drennon Lane. When officials arrived the suspect was standing in his front yard.

Authorities approached the suspect, when Baker County Sheriff, Dana Meade reported that he fired four shots at the deputies. The suspect then barricaded himself inside his home with his wife.

The Baker County Sheriff’s Office, Newton Police Department, GSP, Mitchell and the Miller County Sheriff’s Offices all responded to the scene.  A standoff then ensued, lasting about 4 hours. The suspect finally came out after his children arrived and convinced him to surrender.

There have been no reports of injuries. According to Sheriff Meade, the suspect has a history of mental illness. Officials are still investigating the situation and no charges have been filed.
