VALDOSTA — A sleepy driver caused a fatal accident on Interstate 75 Sunday in Lowndes County, according to the Georgia State Patrol.

Around 3 am on Sunday morning, GSP Troopers responded to an accident involving three vehicles in the southbound lane at mile marker 24.

Reports state a green 2000 Mazda Miata was traveling south on I-75 in the right lane. The vehicle was driven by Geraldo Vargas, 22, a Valdosta State University student from Omega. The Miata traveled off the west shoulder of the roadway striking a white 1995 Mercury Villager that was disabled and unoccupied in the west emergency lane.

After rear-ending the Villager, the Miata then traveled into the middle lane of I-75 facing west, coming to a rest.

A red 2014 International semi-tractor trailer, owned by Knight Transportation, was traveling south on I-75 in the middle lane. The semi, operated by Marcus Menyfield, 43 of Mobile, Alabama. The semi struck the disabled Miata in the passenger side with the front end of the semi.

Mr. Vargas was transported to South Georgia Medical Center for his injuries, and later pronounced dead by Deputy Coroner Brad Carter at SGMC. No injuries were reported from Mr. Menyfield.

Airbags did deploy in the Miata and Mr. Vargas was unrestrained at the time of the collision. Troopers do not suspect any drugs or alcohol but will be pending on a Toxicology report.

Troopers suspect that Mr. Vargas possibly fell asleep causing him to travel off the roadway.  No charges will be filed in this collision.
