Shooting Victim Dies; Suspect Arrested in Tampa

VALDOSTA — Damaria Hill, 18 of Valdosta, shot Sunday has died as a result of his wounds.  The shooter, Eric Simmons, 18 of Valdosta, has been arrested, picked up Monday night near Tampa.

Simmons is being held at the Hillsborough County Jail awaiting extradition to Lowndes County.  Arrest warrants have been issued for Simmons include Aggravated Assault and Possession of a Firearm During the Commission of a Crime. VPD also has received an arrest warrant for murder on Simmons as a result of Hill’s death.

Sunday, Valdosta Police responded to a shooting called in from a residence in the 2300 block of Caldwell Drive.

Lowndes County EMS responded and transported the victim to the South Georgia Medical Center. Hill left the scene in critical condition with a gunshot wound to his body.

Hill was at the Caldwell Street residence when he was confronted outside by Simmons. Police report there was an argument regarding a domestic issue and Simmons fired a handgun at Hill. Simmons then immediately fled the area.
