Manhole Sewage Overflow After Heavy Rain

Sewer-Trap VALDOSTA, GA – After heavy rain Monday night and Tuesday morning, multiple manholes throughout the area have overflowed, resulting in a release of at least 504,000 gallons.

According to the Valdosta Daily Times, the city’s waste water treatment plant fared well, but the amount of water overwhelmed other parts of the system. The four inches of rain resulted in six manholes overflowing, with five continuing to spill sewage on Tuesday, according to the Valdosta Daily Times.

The spills entered the waters of the state and have been reported to the Environmental Protection Division. City officials have begun sampling the six locations collecting bacteria levels, and they have posted signs downstream warning residents of the spills.

Areas and manholes effected by the overflow include: a manhole in the 600 block of Scott Drive overflowing into Sugar Creek, a manhole on Remer Lane overflowing into Sugar Creek, a manhole in the 1200 block of Lake Drive overflowing into Two Mile Branch, Two manholes in the 1400 block of Gornto Road overflowing into Sugar Creek, and a manhole in the 4100 block of Bemiss Road overflowing into Sugar Creek.
