West-Hall-Side-Shot VALDOSTA, GA – A suspicious package was found at the University Center on Valdosta State University’s campus Thursday afternoon.

Campus police were notified of the package by a faculty member, they then notified the Valdosta Police Department to help investigate the scene. VSUPD began evacuating the University Center around 3:30 p.m., and by 4:00 p.m. the building was completely evacuated and Patterson Street was blocked off.

The Georgia Bureau of Investigation Bomb Disposal Unit responded to the scene. The GBI then detonated the lock open on the box, and determined the package was empty and no longer posed a threat.

The University did send out warnings via text message and phone calls to students and parents to warn them of the situation. By 5:30 p.m. the area was clear and traffic resumed as normal.
