Vigil for Young Suicide Victim Draws Hundreds

stop-bully-bullying SYLVESTER, GA – Hundreds filled Jeffords Park in downtown Sylvester Tuesday night in honor of 13 year old Dustin Hammonds.

Hammonds was a Worth County Middle School student who was taken off life support on Monday afternoon after shooting himself last week. Hammonds’ friends say he was bullied during school.

Vigil organizers hope to us Dustin’s death to help other victims of bullying, and to bring awareness to the problems of bullying. The vigil included a moment of silence, lighting of candles, and a siren salute by the fire department. During the vigil, participants were encourage to report bullying by dropping anonymous notes into a box.

There is an account in Dustin’s name at Heritage Bank to help pay for his funeral costs.
