More information has been released about why Clinch County Deputy Lamar Lankford shot and killed a man last week.
Lankford remains on administrative leave after shooting Vernon Mathis, 59, Tuesday.
According to Sheriff Winston Peterson, Mathis went to Camp Creek Church and threatened to kill Christians with a machete. Police were called, and deputies were waiting for Mathis when he returned home.
Mathis then began hitting a patrol car and smashing the windows with the machete.
Officer Stanley Stalvey tried to tase Mathis, and Lankford shot him when he got too close to Deputy Stalvey.
Deputy Lankford has been with the Sheriff’s Office since the 70’s. He will remain on administrative leave until GBI agents finish their investigation.
