DHS recognizes National Kinship Care Month

Share with friends

Release:

September is National Kinship Care Month! Extended family members and nonrelative caregivers play a significant role in caring for children when their parents are having a difficult time and are unable to provide for the child as needed. These kinship caregivers offer a healthy, safe and loving environment for vulnerable children who may have experienced trauma, neglect or parental loss.

Family is important to many of us. Beyond simple biology, there are many meaningful things we share with our family, from traditions to stories. We treasure what we share and those we share it with. Kinship caregivers maintain strong family connections that are needed to raise children.

Stepping forward to care for a relative or close family friend is an expression of love, as well as a significant personal commitment. During National Kinship Care Month – and throughout the year – we salute kinship caregivers for their commitment, because no one else could do a better job caring for children other than their family. To find resources for kinship caregivers, please visit https://dhs.georgia.gov/kinship-care-portal.
