ATLANTA, Ga. – A 36-year-old Atlanta man tricked a woman into becoming close to him after telling the woman, who identifies as a lesbian, that he was a homosexual man.
According to 11Alive, Taurence Callagain met the woman at H.E. Holmes MARTA station and realized that they shared the route. One night, the woman missed the last bus and Callagain offered her a ride home as a way to prevent her from walking a mile home. He told her that he needs to make a stop at his place first to pick up marijuana.
The two then went to Callagain’s bedroom, where the woman thought they were going to smoke. Instead, Callagain began to strangle and violently assault the woman. According to the DA’s office, he stopped the woman from screaming and fighting back by telling her that he would “get my boys to come in and hold you down.”
“The victim heard a male voice in the house, so she was terrified that if she kept screaming Callagain would, in fact, do as he said,” the DA’s office said.
The woman managed to escape. She then ran three miles home, went to the hospital and called the police.
“The defendant claimed the sex was consensual, but Callagain was later arrested,” the spokesman for District Attorney Paul Howard said, “The defendant has a pending aggravated assault case in Fulton County but has no other criminal history.”
His sentencing will be held at a later date – in Georgia, a rape conviction can carry anywhere from 25 years to the death penalty.
