VALDOSTA – A burglary suspect was caught inside an apartment Saturday afternoon after a witness reportedly spotted the man break a window on the second floor and enter the residence.

At approximately 5:54 p.m., the Valdosta Police Department responded to an apartment complex at 1700 Williams Street in reference to a burglary in progress, said VPD Capt. Kari Williams.

“A resident of the complex reported seeing a African American male wearing all black clothing walking around the courtyard. The witness said the male was trying to make entry into first floor apartments but the doors appeared to be locked,” Williams said. “The witness said they observed the male pulled himself up to a second level balcony where the male broke a window and made entry into an apartment.”

Officers on scene surrounded the area and took Jeremy Rhodes, 30, into custody inside the apartment.

“At first, the male gave officers a false name, then he advised that his real name is Jeremy Rhodes. Officers made contact with the residents of the apartment who stated that they were not familiar with Rhodes and did not give Rhodes permission to enter their residence,” Williams said. “Burglaries are always on the rise near holidays and without the help of our community, the reality is that we cannot do this alone. We need assistance from the members of this community to report crimes and step up and come forward as witnesses. When we work together, we all make Valdosta a safer and better place to live.”
