VALDOSTA – Valdosta Mayor John Gayle and Lowndes County officials will present proclamations during separate ceremonies Thursday to recognize National Law Enforcement Appreciation Day (LEAD).

The Federal Bureau of Investigation National Academy Associates created and promoted the day to showcase law enforcement, a career field the organization describes as “rewarding, yet often challenging.” National observance of the day is scheduled for Saturday.

Gayle will present a proclamation to the leadership and staff of the Valdosta Police Department at 10 a.m. on Thursday.

“Citizens are encouraged to wear blue, to thank a police officer and offer any other act of appreciation for these dedicated public safety personnel who put their lives on the line daily to protect the citizens they serve,” said Sementha Mathews, City of Valdosta Public Information Officer.

A Lowndes County LEAD event will take place Thursday at 11 a.m.

“Lowndes County will present Lowndes County Sheriff Chris Prine and his department with a proclamation thanking the Sheriff’s Office for their service to the community,” said Paige Dukes, Lowndes County Clerk. “The presentation will take place at the administrative entrance to the Sheriff’s Office in the building of the Sheriff’s actual office.”

Tickets are also on sale for the annual Law Enforcement Appreciation Dinner, which takes place on Thursday, Feb. 18, at the Rainwater Conference Center to honor the services of local law enforcement personnel.
