JACKSON — Georgia’s only female death row inmate was executed early Wednesday morning.

Kelly Renee Gissendaner was executed at the Georgia Diagnostic and Classification Center in Jackson.

She was convicted and sentenced for organizing the brutal 1997 murder of her husband, Douglas Gissendaner.  Up until as late as Tuesday afternoon, Gissendaner’s attorney fought to stay the execution, using testimony from her children asking for life in prison instead of death. However, the family of the slain husband also spoke on his behalf and the motions were denied.

After the United States Supreme Court denied a final motion to stay, the sentence was carried out at 12:21 am.
