VALDOSTA – The Annette Howell Turner Center for the Arts is proud to announce that two artists-in-residence will develop community-based public art projects from June 15 through July 22, 2015. The artists, Marty Haythorn and Joel Dion, will conduct various open community labs and workshops beginning on June 18.
Mr. Haythorn, who designed and spearheaded the mosaic mural in Bennie’s Alley – “The River of Life in the Azalea City” – will design and create a mosaic planter this summer with community help. He will conduct Open Community Labs to help with the construction of the mosaic piece on Thursday evenings from 6 to 9 p.m., June 18, June 25, July 9, July 16 and Saturday, July 18, from 9 a.m. until Noon. The public is invited to attend these open labs to help with the mosaic’s construction. Edward Jones agent Royce Coleman funded the purchase of raw materials for this project.
Mr. Dion will develop a three-part mural made from metal and ceramic tiles. He will conduct two bike repair workshops on Saturday, June 20, and Saturday, June 27, from 9 a.m. until Noon in the open area behind the Hudson Building across Webster Street from the Art Center. Participants are encouraged to bring their bicycles, junk bicycles and bicycle parts. He will also conduct a printmaking workshop for community members, time and date to be announced.
Recognition plaques bearing the names of participants will be mounted near the completed artworks after installation.
Both projects are scheduled to be completed by July 31. Children under the age of 12 must be accompanied by an adult. Participants should be on time when attending the open labs and workshops. All participants will be asked to sign a photograph release form and must sign the attendance register.
