Release:
Petty Officer 1st Class Nereida Reed, a native of Statenville, Georgia, serves the U.S. Navy assigned to Patrol and Reconnaissance Squadron (VP) 30.
Reed graduated from Echols County High School in 2011.
The skills and values needed to succeed in the Navy are similar to those found in Statenville.
“I came from a small town where everyone knew each other,” said Reed. “We waived at each other passing by and I quickly learned how to be nice to others and how far that can get you. I found I like to go out of my way for people and help whenever I have the chance.”
Reed joined the Navy seven years ago. Today, Reed serves as a yeoman.
“I joined the Navy to provide a better life for my daughter, who was three at the time,” said Reed. “I also wanted to make my mother proud and I have succeeded on both fronts.”
Members of VP 30 fly and maintain the U.S. Navy’s P-8A Poseidon multi-mission maritime aircraft. Designed to secure the U.S. Navy’s future in long-range maritime patrol capability, the P-8A has transformed how the Navy’s maritime patrol and reconnaissance force will train, operate and deploy, according to Navy officials. P-8A aircraft around the globe to monitor the world’s oceans wherever they are needed.
With 90% of global commerce traveling by sea and access to the internet relying on the security of undersea fiber optic cables, Navy officials continue to emphasize that the prosperity of the United States is directly linked to recruiting and retaining talented people from across the rich fabric of America.
“We will earn and reinforce the trust and confidence of the American people every day,” said Adm. Lisa Franchetti, Chief of Naval Operations. “Together we will deliver the Navy the nation needs.”
Reed has many opportunities to achieve accomplishments during military service.
“I am most proud of getting promoted to E-6 last year,” said Reed. “That was a goal I set for myself when I came in as an undesignated Sailor, to make E-6 in six years and I achieved that.”
Reed serves a Navy that operates far forward, around the world, and around the clock, promoting the nation’s prosperity and security.
“I absolutely feel a sense of pride putting on this uniform every day,” said Reed. “Every morning when I get ready for work, I know I have a purpose and I feel the need and desire to help people.”
Reed is grateful to others for helping make a Navy career possible.
“I want to thank my husband, Firecontrolman (Aegis) 1st Class Tres Reed, for his support and encouragement,” added Reed. “He has pushed me to achieve my goals and be a better sailor. I also want to thank my children and my mother and sister for their support, love, and understanding. They motivate me and inspire me to be great.”
