House Bill 1097, a bill that would allow designated school employees to carry guns on campus, has cleared the House Judiciary committee by an 11-7 vote.

Proponents of the bill say the bill would give schools the ability to fight back if they were targeted for an attack, but opponents say that arming school officials is the wrong response to worries of another shooting like that in Newtown, Connecticut last year.

If the bill were to become law, principals would be allowed to designate certain employees to receive the same training as armed security guards and to carry guns at school.

Those opposed to the bill include groups representing Florida school administrators and school boards.
