police lights blurA veteran upset over his VA benefits was involved a standoff in a Lee County subdivision on Wednesday night. Police say Thomasville resident Jason Malone phoned in threats to a military recruiter, angry about his lack of military benefits.

Deputies with the Lee County Sheriff’s Office spotted Malone driving erratically in the recruiter’s neighborhood, and tailed him until he ran out of gas on Philema Road. Once the car was stopped, Malone refused to exit the car and surrender to police, telling them he had a gun inside the car.

Police negotiated with Malone for over 90 minutes, forcing traffic to be re-routed in the area. Malone finally gave himself up shortly before 10 last night- no weapon was found in the car, and charges are pending.
