VALDOSTA, GA – After a tremendous outpouring of support by the Valdosta State fanbase, Courtney Albritton secured a spot in the semifinal round of the NCAA’s Favorite Elite 89 Winner contest. The Blazer All-American received 1,971 votes in the first round, which accounted for more votes than any other Elite 89 winner.

“I am pleasantly surprised by the amount of support this week,” said Albritton. “I knew the Blazer community was behind the softball team during our season, but it really shows the family dynamic of Blazer Nation when there is such a huge display of support during the offseason. I am extremely blessed to call myself a Blazer!”

Each year, an Elite 89 award is presented to the student-athlete with the highest cumulative GPA participating at the finals site for each of the NCAA’s 89 championships. Albritton’s record-setting season on the diamond was equally matched by her performance in the classroom. The All-American from Sycamore, Ga. currently holds a perfect 4.00 GPA as a Middle Grades Education major and was named the NCAA Division II Softball National Championship Tournament Elite 89 recipient in Salem, Va..

Albritton is proud of her accomplishments athletically, but she also understands the value of the work she has put in to prepare herself to be a teacher.

“In the classroom, I am preparing to educate others and encourage them to be successful. I am blessed to have the opportunity to both play at and attend Valdosta State University. Hopefully, I will someday be able to use experiences like this one to inspire my students.”

Second round voting is now open and will continue through today, July 15, when the field of 30 semifinalists will be narrowed down to 10. Voting for the top 10 finalists will take place on Wednesday and Thursday, and the winner will be celebrated across various NCAA platforms.
